From the orchestra level seats, you can see the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the Jemez mountains, and the mesas where Los Alamos National Laboratory (where the atomic bomb was developed) is located. Seasoned operagoers and newcomers alike are drawn to Tosca for its theatricality fueled by. Nights even in the summer get chilly at this elevation, and it’s a good idea to bring a sweater. The Santa Fe Opera’s 66th Festival Season opens on Jwith one of opera’s greatest works, Puccini’s Tosca in a new production directed by Keith Warner with scenery and costumes by Ashley Martin-Davis and lighting design from Allen Hahn. (I am super sensitive to smoke and was very worried I’d be coughing through the whole show, but fortunately I didn’t.)Īs you can see in the picture above, the sides of the theater are open, so you get to enjoy the show semi-outdoors. All the smoke from the fires in California, Oregon, Nevada, and possibly Washington is blowing east to here, and air quality was terrible that day, causing the state to issue a warning to stay inside when possible. Usually the mountains can be seen much more clearly, but the highest peaks were obscured by wildfire smoke. But Josefina and I are used to it, so we do fine. Santa Fe is at an elevation of 7,000 feet if you’re from lower elevations, even walking up the staircases here can leave you out of breath. The theater is encircled by verandas on all three levels where you can walk, catch the breeze, and enjoy the view of the high desert, or the plaza down below where people are walking.

Josefina got free admission of course, because she’s so darn cute. And the tickets are only very inexpensive. But this format is perfect for kids, because it’s lighthearted and easy for short attention spans. A lot of now-famous singers have gotten their starts here, and many of them keep coming back. Apprentices are singers fresh from university who want to get experience singing in an opera house. We saw a showcase of eight different scenes from previously produced operas, presented by the apprentice singers. (These pictures were all taken before or after the performance doing so during the show could have gotten us kicked out.) Josefina was enraptured through the whole show, and didn’t get bored or fidgety once! We had seats in the very back row of the balcony, and had the whole row to ourselves! The row in front of us was empty, so we had a perfect view of the stage. I’ve mentioned before that Josefina is famous in New Mexico, and everywhere I take her, somebody wants to say hello and gush over her.

One of them even had their own Josefina doll. She got recognized by three different people!

I bought her a pretty dress and shoes for the occasion, and did her hair in French braids. On Sunday evening, I took Josefina to see a show at the world famous Santa Fe Opera! She loves music, loves to sing, and loves any chance to visit Santa Fe, so I knew I had to take her with me.
